LatAm Invades Silicon Valley, and we are in awe of what they can do!!!!

On September 12th 2013, at Microsoft's Silicon Valley Campus the 2nd LatAm Invades Silicon Valley Conference was held. The conference was amazing with great speakers and cool startups.  The was also a delegation there from Buenos Aires, Argentina with some great startups.

This event was organized by NXTP Labs, Start-Up Chile and in partnership with Naranya Labs, is a regional platform that provides tools, contacts and create networking opportunities for American start-ups who seek to land in Silicon Valley as well as guide United States companies looking for opportunities in the Latin American region.

The 2nd Austrian Innovation Day - Silicon Valley!!!!!!

On Wednesday, September 4th, 2013 I had an wonderful day of Austrian Innovation, thanks to the Austrian Innovation Center-Silicon Valley and Mario Herger. 

10:00am at TechShop in San Francisco we had a tour of TechShop looking at the inner workings of the place. There was TV Crew from Austria for Servus TV joining us in the fun and making a report for their TV station. Our group worked together to build a fantastic Chain Reaction Machine (also known as a "Rube Goldberg Machine").

Later in the day we went to the 2nd Austrian Innovation Day in Palo Alto, which gave Austrian start-ups, companies, and academics an opportunity to learn about the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit Silicon Valley. Speakers from start-ups, venture capitalists, analysts, academia, law offices etc. will highlight the culture and spirit of the valley through looking at diversity, innovation, creativity, risk, and other values that make the Silicon Valley to the most innovative location on the planet.

Swedish Startups from Chalmers!!!!!

On Thursday, August 29th, 2013 the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce San Francisco and Silicon Valley hosted a delegation of 30 people visiting us from Chalmers University of Technology's Born Global development program. Among those visiting will be 9 Swedish startups which were selected for this exclusive development program because of their estimated large growth potential by a group of Serial Entrepreneurs, Venture Capitalists and Investment Managers. Born Global is an Almi-financed action-research project run by researchers at the Center for Business Innovation (CBI) at Chalmers.

Patent Trolls vs Startups!!!!

Patents are commonly described as intellectual property, but this aspirational term obscures important differences between patents, trademarks, copyright, trade secrets and other property-like interests.  While patents can be bought and sold like houses, they differ from other forms of “property” in most respects.  Indeed, patents work very differently in different industrial and commercial contexts, despite patent law being written as if one size fits all.  While the patent system may work relatively transparently and reasonably well in the pharmaceutical sector, it is hindering rather than supporting innovation in the information technology and software sectors. Patents may be appropriate grants for protecting the investment behind a single drug, but they too readily become outsized, dangerous weapons in sectors where products consist of tens of thousands of patentable functions.  Large portfolios combined with a 20-year patent term favor incumbents, encourage the milking of old technology and disadvantage innovative newcomers, who begin with few if any patents.
